Introducing Mary-Kate Pritchard, QWO's New Respite Program Director
For the past 12 years I have had the opportunity of working with individuals with disabilities in many different capacities.
In June of 1997 I began working at Camp Wilton, a summer camp for individuals with disabilities in upstate New York. I held various positions from direct care counselor to Arts & Crafts Activity Head. I continued to spend my summers at summer camp for 7 years. Each position came with different tasks and responsibilities that I gained valuable lessons and experience from.
While continuing my education at a local community college I transitioned to working in a residential setting in this field. I spent 4 years with a local non-profit agency in New York working with many different individuals with varying abilities.
In 2005 I completed my bachelor’s degree in Marketing and Management at Siena College, a private Franciscan institution. I again was drawn to working for a local non-profit with the purpose of providing residential homes for individuals with disabilities. Since graduating I have worked with various non-profit agencies in different programs such as a supported employment program, residential setting and most recently at Mt. Hood Kiwanis Camp as the Assistant Program Director. This position allowed me to assist in continual development of the current program and planning of a winter camp. Now, as a volunteer, I continue to contribute to the camp in different roles – for example, by serving on the Walk, Roll or Stroll committee and participating in various fundraising activities.
With each position I’ve held came new challenges, rewards and insight into living in a world that does not always accept individuals because of different abilities. My passion lies with empowering individuals for who they are and the capabilities and aspirations they hold. I look forward to working with Quiet Waters Outreach, gaining more knowledge, enduring new experiences, meeting amazing people and sharing my skills and passion with this community.
